Shopping tip: Choosing shoes for healthy feet

Since there are so few Restorative Exercise Specialists in the world, and we’re spread out all over North America, Europe and Australia, we communicate primarily through Facebook. Although many of our discussions are about super nerdy technical stuff, the most popular topic, and the one that comes up again and again on the board, is definitely shoes. Shoes, shoes and more shoes.
We swap tips, experiences, information on sales, and any new brands that we’ve scoped out – because picking minimal footwear is much tougher than you’d expect, and gets expensive fast. It’s also a big decision from a health point of view, because what you wear on your feet makes a huge difference in your ability to get them happier and healthier. So we come back to it again and again, every season, and I thought I’d post this week in the hopes of helping you make your own better footwear choices.
If you want to move naturally, you need feet that are able to move naturally too. That means foot coverings that interfere as little as possible with the way your feet work (this applies to everyone – even people with flat feet or who wear orthotics – these are muscle-related issues and can be addressed with exercise and a very careful and gradual transition to minimal shoes. I’ll be talking flat feet in more detail in an upcoming post).
Here’s what to look for:
1. How much is the heel raised above the toes? Any amount of heel raise will mess up your entire body’s alignment. Can you say lower back pain? Pelvic floor issues? meh.  Zero-drop is the term for the most nature-friendly choice.
2. How stiff are the soles? Inflexible soles prevent the foot from articulating as you walk over bumps in the ground, which means the small foot muscles atrophy and the joints stiffen.
3. How wide is the toe box? Almost all North American shoes aren’t actually shaped like feet – your toes are supposed to be wider than the ball of your foot. Squished toes are a big cause of bunions and nerve issues. Also if you have enough toe box, you can wear toe spacers all day – super bonus.
flips
4. How well attached is the shoe? If it’s not stuck to you properly (aka flip-flops, slides and the like), your toe muscles are working double time to grip the shoe. Although that sounds potentially like a good thing, as we obviously want muscle use, it’s not the type of muscle use that will translate to a better health outcome. So get a shoe that attaches by itself, no toe gripping required.
5. It’s best to avoid toe spring as well. This is a strange addition to shoes by people who seem to have thought that toes like to fly in the air. It is a main cause of hammertoes.
So the ideal footwear is the shoe that interferes least with the foot’s natural mechanics – the same shape as your foot, flexible, no changes in height at the toe or the heel, and is solidly attached. But, and it’s a big but, your feet have probably spent so long in regular shoes that a quick transfer to minimal footwear is going to cause more harm than good.

The 12 Best Fall Trends from New York Fashion Week

As always, the end of New York Fashion Week brings with it the inevitable forecasting of next year’s biggest trends, and while it’s still too early to tell which styles the masses will take to, there was a handful of strong recurring looks that emerged with a vengeance from the high-fashion Fall 2016 runways. While a few are holdovers from this past fall (statement fur, thoughtful layering), others definitely feel shiny and new (chokers, excessive ruffles).

Overall though, the biggest trend appeared to be not really paying attention to the season at all. Blame it on the exceptionally warm weather most of the U.S. faced this winter, but nearly every designer presented fall collections that felt springlike in nature—slinky slip dresses, billowy off-the-shoulder tops, florals, and strapless tops.

And while coats were present in most collections, we were hard-pressed to find chunky knits, wintry trousers, and other pieces typically found on fall runways.

Still, there’s plenty to look forward to, namely the 12 trends highlighted below. Take a look and let us know what you’re looking forward to wearing .as the season approaches.

2 of 13

Michael Kors; J.Crew; Prabal Gurung (ImaxTree)
Statement Fur

Overall, fur—both real and faux—made a strong showing on fall runways in various forms, but it was the use of bold colors and prints that really caught our eye. Two we bet the street-style crowd will embrace: Michael Kors’ floral fur and J.Crew’s cotton candy coat

3 of 13

A Detacher; Christian Siriano; Cushnie et Ochs (ImaxTree)
Ruffles

We’re used to seeing over-the-top pieces on runways that often employ laughable proportions. But for fall, designers like Jill Stuart and Cushnie et Ochs managed to fuse structured high-fashion ruffles with wearability.

4 of 13

Karen Walker; Marissa Webb; Michael Kors (ImaxTree)
Shades of Tan

Expect to see tons of pants, knits, skirts, and—our favorite—outerwear done up in varying shades of tan, perhaps the chicest, most classic color there is, from muted khaki to soft camel.

5 of 13

Rachel Zoe; Tibi; Suno (ImaxTree)
Gold Metallic

Once upon a time, the thought of shiny gold attire called to mind glitzy grandmas or Las Vegas party girls. However, thanks to an especially strong showing on Fall 2016 runways, metallics—specifically gold—are poised to be a seasonal standout. At Rachel Zoe, a lamé-like sheer maxi stole the show, while cool-girl label Baja East opted for gold “going-out” tops paired with slouchy tan pants and flat slides, accentuating their wearability.

6 of 13

Altuzarra; VFiles; Lacoste (ImaxTree)
Shearling Bombers

Classic aviator-style shearling jackets are back for Fall 2016, with designers such as Altuzarra and Kate Spade showing them with everything from kick flares to midi dresses.

7 of 13

Karen Walker; Creatures of the Wind; Tory Burch
Turtlenecks Under Dresses

Why wait until next fall when you can start testing out this mega-trend—long-sleeve shirts layered under dresses—right now? Not only is it easy for any body type to pull off, but it allows you to take those slinky slips, glitzy sequins, and low-cut cocktail dresses out in broad daylight.

8 of 13

Victoria Beckham; Rachel Zoe; Calvin Klein
Plaid Overcoats

Fall runways usually bring more tartan than we can handle, but this year, labels like Calvin Klein and Victoria Beckham approached plaid in a much cleaner, subtler, muted way, and used the print on everything from outerwear to cocktail dresses.

9 of 13

Rebecca Minkoff; Brock Collection; Hellessy
Off-the-Shoulder

Perhaps taking cues from the fact that OTS cuts were massive in the retail space throughout 2015 and Spring ’16, designers amped up their offering for Fall 2016, showcasing dramatic blouses and luxe-looking dresses with the subtly sexy silhouette.

10 of 13

Delpozo; Ulla Johnson; Marissa Webb
Dusty Pink & Yellow

At first blush, this modern color combination felt more suited to spring than fall, but designers such as Ulla Johnson and Delpozo were careful to use separates that had an autumnal feel such as turtlenecks and coats.

11 of 13

J.Crew; Zimmermann; Cristian Siriano (ImaxTree)
Pantsuits

It’s probably not a coincidence that fashion wasn’t shy about updating the dowdy pantsuit for fall—ahem, Hillary Clinton. Slim, stylish, and often colorful, the new power suit is just as suitable for a night out as it is for the boardroom.

12 of 13

Fall Florals

It’s not every fall designers play with florals but for 2016, a pretty hefty number of number of designers kicked minimalism to the curb and added small yet bold prints to sweatshirts, skirts, and sweeping dresses.

13 of 13

Adam Selman; Hellessy; Oscar de la Renta (ImaxTree)
Chokers

It doesn’t matter if you prefer a skinny silk scarf or a chunky choker—just make sure something is around your neck this fall to add a little extra oomph to everything from button-down blouses to cocktail dresses. And nope—it doesn’t make you basic.

QUICK TIP: HOW TO GET EVERY LAST DROP OF MASCARA

From dealing with excess perfume to all the uses for dry shampoo, I’ve been sharing more quick tips than ever. It’s nice to know that a few quick hacks can combat beauty emergencies and save time and money in a pinch, especially when it comes to salvaging the last bits of perfectly usable products that were quite the splurge in the first place!
how to use every last drop of mascara
This latest quick tip is based off of the idea that hot water will loosen up any dried up, hard to reach mascara. But just running water over your mascara tube alone won’t heat it up enough, the way it does with your eyelash curler. ( Enjoy Up To 10% OFF On Select Items With eBay Coupon Extras. Save on health, beauty, toys and more!!! Click here ).  Instead, you want to make sure you’re properly warming up the tube. Next time you’ve got perfectly good mascara at the bottom of that container here’s what you do:

.

1. Tightly secure the lid to your mascara.
2. Submerge it in a bowl of warm water. Think almost just before boiling but not quite – you don’t want to run the risk of ruining the product with excessive heat.
3. Wait 3-5 minutes.
4. Dry it off and let cool for a few minutes.
5. Give it a try!
Easy peasy.
