TAME YOUR TRESSES: HOW TO MANAGE COLOR TREATED HAIR

The sun is shining, the temps are warming up, and all over Instagram I’m seeing people give their locks a colorful update. (Forget the fact that it’s still March – hair can go on a beach vacay any time.) I’ve recently updated my hair look too (as you can see here) and I’m not about to neglect these color treated strands! So, today we’re going back to basics with hair care:

Manage Color Treated Hair

You might’ve seen products for color treated hair at the drugstore and maybe even purchased a few at your hairstylist’s recommendation, but a few days go by and it’s back to continuing your pre-color regimen. Sound familiar? A month or two later the color has either faded or turned some strange brassy tinge that you might not even notice until you go to take your latest selfie.

When it comes to managing treated tresses, though, it’s all about the product. Let’s start with shampoo. While you shouldn’t use clarifying shampoo every time you wash, a clarifying or is essential to maintaining hair health, and will extract product buildup to restore shine and vibrancy. As for your regular ‘poo, NEVO by Pravana is a hairstylist fave because it’s chockfull of natural products to preserve the surface of hair. You can go the same route for conditioner, but if you’re looking for another option, there’s plenty to choose from. For example, Aveda’s restructuring conditioner boasts one surprising ingredient for undoing color’s damage – quinoa – which repairs weakened hair.

Whatever you do, don’t forget the weekly (or at least occasional) deep condition. The right hair mask is no joke! It can leave even the most fried, unruly strands looking salon fresh in just fifteen minutes or less. It’s a 10 Miracle Mask is infused with vitamin-rich oils and antioxidants to detangle, soften, smooth, de-frizz, protect color and more. If it’s already somewhat late in the game for you and you want to at least perform some damage control, try a restorative mask from MoroccanOil – it’s specifically formulated to combat chemical and environmental effects.

Another interesting way to prolong color? A hair glaze. This is like a glossy coat for your hair that conditions while enacting a salon-quality shine. Work in and rinse out formulas like Gloss Moderne’s high gloss masque can even extend the life of your hair treatments while delivering instant gratification in the form of softer-than-soft strands.

Last but not least, using that flat iron or curling wand without heat protectant spray is one hair mistake you don’t want to make, color treated or not.
