Although I don’t believe in doing something (or not doing something) just because it’s trending, it’s just a fact of life that pastel hues like turquoise and cotton candy pink don’t exactly scream fall. A lot of people prefer to go dark this time of year, pairing their blacks and browns with reds, blues and purples instead. But in case that’s not your thing, I’m showing you how you can get the best of both worlds and rock pastels along with your fave fall fashion staples – without looking like you’re confused as to what season it is. For example, if you want to give your pink, mint or lavender pieces a cold-weather edge, pair them with black, like below:

Black + pastel make a great pair because they’re the ultimate contrast (especially if you’re bored with black and white). The What? Pleated Dress is a prime example of pastels spicing up a fall look. The crewneck sweater is warm and the pleated skirt is an obvious match for the pastel text. You can also pair pastels with sheer thigh high socks or a sleek material like this vegan leather jacket to give those feminine shades a bold twist.

Of course, there’s no rule that says you have to wear dark colors in the fall, or sport black or brown at all. Your only hurdle? Making sure you come off as cozy, not overly springy. Today I wanted to share my guide on finding the most flattering skirt for your body type.     This is by no means a strict rulebook – after all, you should wear whatever you feel most beautiful in. But some girls shy away from skirts because they think they’re intimidating or only reserved for stick thin models.  Not true! Just follow this guide and get ready to get your twirl on.

First, let’s take a look at the 4 most common body types:

Banana: Your body is more or less the same width from your chest to your hips, with very little curve

Apple: Your chest is the widest part of your body and you have narrower hips

Pear: Your hips are the curviest part of your body

Hourglass: Your waist is the smallest part of your body and your chest and hips curve outwards

Banana shaped: Most skirts look great with this body type.  To give yourself an illusion of curves, find a structured mini that hits right above your hips and curves out slightly. One of this season’s hottest skirts – the envelope (or origami) skirt – looks fabulous on this body type!

Apple shaped: To balance up your curvier upper half, find a skirt that cinches at the waist and flounces outwards.  Keep your top sleek and play with fun patterns and shapes on the bottom.

Pear shaped: Fitted at the waist and swingy through the hips makes the perfect skirt for pear-shaped ladies.   Draw eyes towards your waist, not your hips, by choosing a high-waisted, A-line style skirt and make sure it hits right around your knees – it will elongate your frame. 

Hourglass shaped: Show off those curves, hourglass ladies! Select a form hugging pencil skirt that hits right above the knees and tuck in your top – instant chic! A high-waisted A-line skirt is also flattering for this body type.
